Biography

In 1925 French weightlifter Jules Meese set a world record in the press in the lightweight class. Meese was a successful athlete, becoming a four-time national champion in addition to being selected to compete at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics. At the Games he started strongly, sharing the joint-lead in the military press element of the competition. In the snatch and the clean & jerk, however, he did not replicate his earlier performance, slipping down the rankings to finish sixth overall. Meese was selected to compete at the Los Angeles Olympics in 1932, but he was unable to forfeit two weeks’ pay to attend the Games.
