Biography

The daughter of the Rev. William Henry Thackwell, Albertine Thackwell enjoyed a long archery career with both the Broughton Archery Club and Worcestershire Archery Society. In more than 40 years as a leading archer she appeared in the Grand National Archery Meeting for the national championships on many occasions, and at Cheltenham in 1894 she won the Associated Club prize for the most golds. At Oxford in 1898 she finished with the fourth best gross score, and when she appeared at Oxford again in 1925, she was 62-years-of-age at the time and won the prize for the most golds at 60 yards.

Thackwell was involved in the local community at Little Comberton (Worcestershire), and was president of the Comberton Women’s Institute (WI) for many years, and also played a key role in the development of the local District Nursing Association. She was a fine horsewoman and rode with the Croome Hunt. Thackwell never married.
