A weaver in the Lancashire wool industry, Alfred Baxter qualified for the 1924 Paris Olympics after winning the Olympic trial at Holborn. At Paris he broke four Olympic records and, also that year, set five British records at one meeting, when he also claimed a world record of 109kg (240lb) in the two-handed clean and jerk. Baxter won the 1926 British featherweight title and went to his second Olympics at Amsterdam in 1928, where he set another Olympic record. Baxter was still lifting in his mid-30s, and was the 1933 Lancashire featherweight champion.
