Of the three British weightlifters in the middleweight class at the 1924 Paris Olympics, Fred Lowes had a poor Games and was marginally the worst of the three. He finished below Fred Attenborough and John Austin in most of the five elements. Lowes was second to Attenborough in the 1925 British Championship, however, and did set a British amateur 12st (middleweight) record for the two-handed clean and jerk with a lift of 256lb (116kg).
