Jürgen Heuser was an East German super-heavyweight lifter who first burst into the scene in 1974 when he won the bronze medal at the Worlds, and he finished fourth in 1975. He was expected to compete at the 1976 Montréal Olympics, but just before the Games sustained a shoulder injury. In 1977, he again won bronze at the Worlds, and in 1978 crowned his career with the gold medal. In 1979 and 1980 he added two more silver medals at Worlds. At the European Championships Hauser won bronze in 1976-77, and silver in 1978-79, and then won a silver medal at the 1980 Moskva Olympics.
Heuser later worked as an engineer at Stralsund Volkswerft. He became technical director in the central pioneer camp in Barth. After German re-unification he became a taxi entrepreneur in Prerow on Darß. After re-unification it became known that he was given doping substances during his weightlifting career by GDR sports officials and trainers.
