East German weightlifter Georg Miske won a bronze medal at both the 1957 and 1958 European Championships in the featherweight class. At the 1956 Melbourne Olympics he finished sixth and, four years later in Rome, 13th. He was the first East German world-class weightlifter after World War II. He won the East German national titles in 1952-57, 1959 and 1960. By profession, he was trained as a machine fitter, but later became a member of the Nationale Volksarmee (National People’s Army) and rose to the rank of a major.
