Rolf Milser was a world class West German weightlifter. He competed in three Olympics: 1972 in München, 1976 in Montréal and 1984 in Los Angeles. At Munchen in 1972, he was seventh in the light-heavyweight class, and at Montréal in 1976 he missed the snatch element due to cramps sustained while doing body exercises. However, at Los Angeles In 1984, Milser won the gold medal in the heavyweight class, which was eased by the absence of the East European weightlifters due to the Moscow-led boycott of the Games. In 1980, Milser could not participate due to the US-led boycott of the Western nations.
Milser also had several podium finishes at World Championships, winning a bronze medal in 1974, silver in 1977 and 1979 and was twice a gold medal winner, in 1978 and 1984. At the European Championships he won silver in 1977 and 1978, and gold in 1979. He set two clean & jerk world records, one at light-heavyweight in 1976 and one at middle-heavyweight in 1979. Domestically, he won 12 West German national titles in a row from 1972-83, and set 115 German records.
After his active career, he became chief national coach for 12 years, and then for five years, was president of the Association of Graduated Coaches in West Germany. By profession, he became the owner of a hotel in Duisburg. During his active career he pleaded the open use of anabolic steroids in 1977, and for a controlled intake until the prohibition of these drugs. In 1984 he was an actor in a German comedy film Drei und eine halbe Portion (Three and a half portion), accompanied by Jürgen Hingsen, and actors Karl Dall and Patrick Bach.
