West German middleweight lifter Karl-Heinz Radschinsky surprisingly won the gold medal at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics in absence of the East European weightlifters who boycotted the Games. Radschinsky was subsequently awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award. In 1981 and 1982, he also won two bronze medals at the World Championships. He also won nine national titles.
Radschinsky was arrested in West Germany in 1985 for possessing steroids with intent to sell. In 1986 he was sentenced to 18 months probation and he had to pay 35,000 German marks. He owned a fitness studio, but then changed to real estate agency at Chemnitz.
