Karl Schwitalle came fourth at the 1936 Berlin Olympics in the weightlifting lightweight class. In 1938, he won the bronze medal at the World Championships and in 1942 won his only national title, having previously been runner-up in 1935-37 and 1939-41. Schwitalle was killed in action in Poland in 1945 during World War II.
