Steinhöfel was a middleweight and won the silver medal in 1988, representing East Germany. In 1992 at Barcelona and 1996 at Atlanta, he finished sixth, now representing re-unified Germany. In 2000 at Sydney he was seventh and in 2004 he placed 13th.
At World Championships, Steinhöfel won bronze in 1987 and 1989, and silver in 1994. He added another bronze at the 1989 Europeans and a silver in 1997. He later became a licensed freelance weightlifting coach at Chemnitz.
