Born in Baghdad in 1935, Shakir Mahmoud practiced bodybuilding, winning multiple Iraqi championships in the late 1950s and the early 1960s. In addition to training at his local club, Mahmoud was also a police officer and represented the police force in competitions. With his bodybuilding background he soon moved into weightlifting, winning national titles as both a middle-heavyweight and heavyweight. In 1964 Mahmoud was selected to compete at the Tokyo Olympics, where he finished 17th in the middle-heavyweight with a total of 382.5 kg. Following his career he became a noted coach in the sport.
