Chung Kum Weng’s international weightlifting career began at the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games where, representing Malaya, he took silver in the featherweight division behind Tan Ser Cher of Singapore. His next stop was the 1960 Rome Olympics, where he placed 11th. After Malaya united with nearby nations to form Malaysia in 1963, he began competing for this new country, including at the 1964 Tokyo Games, where he was 10th.
Chung had moved to Wales after the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, and by 1966 he was eligible to represent them at the 1966 edition, where he won gold. He also competed in 1970, where he just missed a medal in fourth.
