Biography

Jiří Zubrický was a Czechoslovak weightlifter who competed in the super-heavyweight class throughout his career. In addition to winning eight national titles, Zubrický represented his nation from 1984 to 1996, becoming a junior European champion in his first year. In 1987 he lifted a total of 437.5 kg at the World Championships in Ostrava, setting a Czech record that still stood at the time of his death in December 2025. The following year Zubrický competed at the Seoul Olympics but did not provide a valid lift in the snatch element.

In 1990 Zubrický won bronze in both the clean & jerk and the overall total in the +110 kg class at the World Championships in Budapest. Two years later he repeated the result at the European Championships in Szekszárd to earn himself another place at the Olympics. At the 1992 Barcelona Games he managed to complete valid lifts in both the clean & jerk and the snatch to finish sixth overall with a combined total of 329.5 kg. Zubrický was later inducted into the Czech Weightlifting Association Hall of Fame.
