David Schumacher was sent to Concordia College in South Australia in the hopes that he might become a pastor, but he was more interested in physical education. He took up wrestling at the age of 18 and, after winning several national championships, was selected to represent his country in the lightweight, freestyle category at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. There, he lost his first two bouts and was eliminated from the competition.
Although he retired from active competition shortly thereafter, he continued to be involved in the sport for the rest of his life as a coach and administrator and was also a torchbearer in the relay for the 2000 Sydney Games. By career, he worked as a fitting and turning professional until his retirement in 1992 and was also a teacher.
