Biography

Gerald Bradshaw of the Hammersmith Amateur Wrestling Club was a physician and surgeon at the Royal Naval Hospital Haslar in Gosport, Hampshire during which time he participated in the wrestling events of the 1908 Olympics in London. Competing in the middleweight class of both the Greco-Roman and freestyle events, Bradshaw unfortunately lost both of his matches, to fellow countryman Edgar Bacon in the freestyle, and Frithiof Mårtensson of Sweden in the Greco-Roman.

The son of physician and surgeon Dr. Julian Watson Bradshaw, Gerald Bradshaw grew up in Marylebone and was trained at St. Mary’s Hospital Medical School where he graduated in the early 1900s. A specialist in ophthalmology, he was a member of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCS, LRCP), also holding a Diploma in Ophthalmic Medicine and Surgery (DOMS). Retiring from the Royal Naval Medical Service in 1914, Bradshaw continued to work in his occupation well into his late fifties.
