Biography

Lancashire’s Sonny Darby reached the quarter-final of the 1924 Olympic bantamweight freestyle wrestling competition, where he lost to the eventual gold medal winner, Kustaa Pihlajamäki of Finland. Darby went on to win his only British title the following year when he beat Bert Sansum to capture the bantamweight title. Darby failed in his attempt to retain his title in 1926 when beaten by fellow Lancastrian Harry Pennington of Leigh.
