Biography

William Jones of the Olympic Amateur Wrestling Club (AWC) in Walworth won the British amateur featherweight (Cumberland and Westmorland) title in 1905 and maintained a constant presence in London’s amateur wrestling circles for much of the early 1900s. In 1908, he was one of 10 wrestlers from the Olympic AWC to participate in the London Olympics, competing in the freestyle, featherweight event and losing his sole match to James White of Portsmouth. Jones later continued to be involved wrestling as a referee and judge.

Jones was one of four children born to Edna Wilson and Sefton William Jones; his father was a commission agent and commercial traveller. William Jones followed in his father’s profession, and resided in the London area for his entire life. He was married in 1911 and had one daughter, and re-married in 1930 after being widowed in 1920.
