Biography
John McKenzie was born in Walworth. One of 10 members of the Olympic Amateur Wrestling Club to participate in the 1908 Olympics, McKenzie competed in the lightweight freestyle event, losing in the quarter-final to George MacKenzie (of no known relation) after receiving a bye in the first round.
The son of John McMullan McKenzie (died 1897), a sign and glass writer, and Grace Harriet Richards, a tailor, McKenzie grew up in Camberwell, London alongside six siblings. He later served in World War I with the Royal Navy and worked as a clerk and salesman.
