Biography

Robert Phelps emigrated to the United States shortly after the outbreak of World War I and worked in the motor industry for the Packard Motor Car Company in Detroit. He was drafted into the US Army in both World Wars. Phelps’ American wife died in 1939 at the age of 52 but Phelps lived into his 90th year until passing away in Florida.

The Olympic Games appearance in 1912 was the highlight of Phelps’ wrestling career. The year after his Stockholm appearance he reached the semi-final of the middleweight division at the Olympic Amateur Wrestling Club’s annual open competition, only to lose to fellow 1912 Olympian Arthur Gould of the home club.
