George Saunders was one of three members of the Passmore Edwards Settlement Gymnastics Society, alongside Risdon Couch and Percy Cockings to participate in the 1908 Olympic Games in London. Competing in the bantamweight class of the freestyle wrestling event, Saunders defeated John Cox in the first round, but lost in the quarter-final to Frederick Tomkins of the Walworth-based Olympic Amateur Wrestling Club.
The son of Joseph and Harriet Saunders, George Saunders was raised in St Giles, London, where his father worked as a carman. His father, Joseph died when he was still in his teens, and George later worked in the upholstery profession. He later resided in the Finsbury area of London, and never married and had no children.
