Arthur Wallis was a native of Hackney, London, one of five children born to Henry Wallis, a clockmaker, and his wife Emily. He was one of six members of the German Gymnastic Society to participate in the wrestling events of 1908 London Olympics, and lost his only match to Aubrey Coleman in the middleweight freestyle tournament. Wallis later worked as penmaker, painter and craftsman. He was married and had two children.
