Uwe Neupert was the most successful East German wrestler of all-time. In total he won 19 international medals, among them the freestyle silver medal in the light-heavyweight class at the 1980 Moskva Olympics. Due to the Soviet-led boycott of the 1984 Los Angeles Games he could not defend his medal. In 1988, he came back to Seoul but finished an unfortunate fourth as a heavyweight, losing the bronze medal match against US wrestler Bill Scherr.
At World Championships Neupert won two gold medals in 1978 and 1982, a silver medal in 1977, and bronze medals in 1981, 1983, 1985, and 1989. At the European Championships he collected three gold medals in 1978-79, and 1981; silver medals in 1980, 1982, and 1984-85; and bronze medals in 1983, 1986, and 1988.
Neupert studied sports at the DHfK Leipzig (Deutsche Hochschule für Körperkultur) and became a graduated sports teacher and wrestling coach. After German re-unification it became known that he was systematically doped as part of the state-prescribed doping system in the former GDR. He later owned a fitness studio in Reilingen in the Black Forest and worked as a personal fitness trainer.
