Wolfgang Nitschke won his first international medal, a silver, at the 1969 European Championships in the freestyle welterweight class. He won a bronze medal at the 1972 Europeans and that same year finished fifth at the Olympic Games. Domestically, he won three East German titles in 1969-71.
Nitschke retired in 1972 and started a coaching career. He first worked with the national team of the former GDR, then after re-unification moved to West Germany and, in 1991, was appointed head coach to the German freestyle wrestlers.
