Lothar Schneider wrestled in Greco-Roman featherweight both at the 1964 Toyko and the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. In Mexico, then representing East Germany, he finished eighth for his best Olympic result. He had won the inter-national qualifications in 1964 but took only one match in Tokyo. At the 1965 Worlds in Tampere he won a bronze medal, which was his best international result. One year later he placed fourth at the Europeans at Essen in West Germany. In 1965, 1966 and 1968 he won East German national titles.
By profession, Schneider was trained as a cast steel former, but then studied railroad engineering. In his later years he worked as a vocational school teacher. Schneider also became a longtime coach and in 1995 was named president of his home club at Dessau.
