Eduard Giray won his first national title in 1967 as a teenager in the 52 kg freestyle. As a senior he won nine German Championships from 1972-80 and was also a member of the German team champion ASV Schorndorf in 1975. The highlight of his career, in addition to his participation in the 1976 Olympics, was winning the silver medal at the 1979 European Championships in the 62 kg freestyle class.
He retired from competition after the Federal Republic of Germany boycotted the 1980 Moskva Olympics. Professionally Eduard Giray worked as an administrative employee and was also a wrestling coach. He died at the age of 65 years due to a heart attack while bike riding.
