Biography

Light-flyweight wrestler Willi Heckmann finished eighth at the 1976 Montréal Olympics in the freestyle event, after his loss in the fourth round to the upcoming bronze medallist Akira Kudo from Japan. The previous year, Heckmann finished sixth in both the World Championships and Europeans. From 1971-80 he won seven individual West German national titles, and two team titles with his home club VfK Schifferstadt.

Heckmann became a graduated sports teacher and turned to coaching at Schifferstadt. He then became head of the sports school of the Regional Sports Federation of Rhineland Palatine at Schifferstadt.
