Biography

West German wrestler Adolf Seger was considered one of the best West German wrestlers of all time, winning two Olympic bronze medals. At München in 1972, he participated in the freestyle welterweight class and at Montréal four years later, competed as a middleweight. Seger, and his fellow-Olympian brother Edmund, were both coached by their father Karl, as were their other four brothers. Adolf Seger also won two middleweight gold medals at the 1975 Minsk, and the 1977 Lausanne World Championships. He won a silver at Mexico City in 1978.

At the European Championships Seger won three gold medals, at welterweight in 1972-73, and at middleweight in 1976. He also added two more silvers in 1974 and 1978, and bronze medals in 1969 and 1979. He later participated in senior master tournaments and won several podiums, including ten World titles. Domestically, he won ten West German national titles in a row from 1971-80.

In 1972, Seger was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award. By profession, he was a postman at Deutsche Bundespost. He was also later a regional politician, and coached wrestling at his home club, AV Germania Freiburg-St.Georgen.
