Andreas Steinbach was a so-called Volksdeutscher, born in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, who emigrated from the Soviet Union to West Germany in 1981. He represented West Germany as a Greco-Roman wrestler at the 1988 Seoul Olympics in the light-heavyweight. Four years later he represented re-unified Germany at Barcelona in the heavyweight class, finishing fifth on both occasions.
Steinbach won three medals at the European Championships with a silver in 1991 and two bronzes in 1989 and 1992. Domestically, he won national titles from 1988-89 and in 1996. Since 2007, Steinbach has coached RG Lahr and was assisted by his son Julian.
