Biography

Károly Ferencz began his sports career as a footballer in 1925 before switching to wrestling in 1928. He competed for MTK from 1929 and BSZKRT SE (Budapesti Előre) from 1935 to 1948. He won the national youth championship in 1931. Between 1935 and 1946 he won 11 national championship titles, nine in freestyle, and two in Greco-Roman.

Ferencz represented the Hungarian national team 42 times from 1933 to 1948. He participated in the 1933 Helsinki European Bound Championship in the featherweight, as well as the 1937 Munich and 1946 Stockholm Freestyle Championships, and the 1947 Prague European Bound Championship.

His greatest success was winning a bronze medal in the lightweight freestyle at the 1948 London Olympics. While still a competitor he was the head of the Budapesti Előre department and coach. In the 1950s he was a competition judge, the national team coach, and the head of the coaching committee. Ferencz worked for the BSZKRT and then for the Budapesti Közlekedési Vállalat.
