Lajos Keresztes worked as a butcher, but began to wrestle following medical advice. In 1919-21, he was a wrestler with HSC, but in 1921-24 lived in Sweden, Finland and then Germany. In 1924 he returned home and wrestled for MAC, competing in Greco-Roman wrestling as a lightweight, and was on the national team from 1924-28. He took part in two Olympics, winning silver in 1924 and gold in 1928, after which he retired from competition.
In 1928 Keresztes took over as head of butchery in Budapest. From 1946 he worked as a coach at Vasas, where his most succesful pupil was the two-time Olympic heavyweight champion, István Kozma.
