Biography

János Kocsis began his athletic career in 1965 as a wrestler for Kinizsi Húsos SE. In 1968 Kocsis joined Bp. Honvéd where he mainly competed in freestyle, initially in the 68 kg category and later in the 74 kg class. Individually he won the Hungarian championship four times between 1971 and 1976, and six times in team competitions. Between 1972 and 1980 he was a member of the Hungarian national team intermittently.

Kocsis won a bronze medal at the 1973 World Championships in Tehran. Over the next three years he came close to the podium at the European Championships, with him finishing fifth in Madrid, and fourth in both Ludwigshafen and Leningrad. He represented Hungary at two Olympic Games: finishing ninth in Montréal in 1976 and tenth in Moskva in 1980 in the freestyle 68 kg category.

In 1981 Kocsis had moved to Bp. Spartacus, but by then he no longer achieved significant results. He retired from active sports in 1983.
