Biography

Gyula Németi (born Steinhardt) started to wrestle at the age of 15 as an athlete of the DVSC. He competed both in Greco-Roman and freestyle, middle and light-heavyweight. Between 1946 and 1950, as a middleweight wrestler, he won four gold medals in the Hungarian championship. In 1944 he was a member of the DVSC team that won the team championship title.

Németi participated at two Olympics as a member of the Hungarian national team, finishing unplaced in London in 1948, and four years later in Helsinki a distinguished fourth place. In 1949 he won the World College Championship in Budapest. In 1950 he reached the podium at the World Championship in Stockholm, winning a bronze medal, and finished fifth at the 1953 World Championship in Naples.

He was known as the “supple king” by his teammates because he crushed most of his opponents to the mat with a back arm lift. After finishing his sports career Németi was also a coach of the DVSC wrestling team, and from 1957 to 1963, he was the President of the DVSC.
