József Rusznyák played football and handball in his home village. Later, in Sátoraljaújhely, he learned the basics of boxing and his later chosen sport, wrestling. His talent quickly became apparent on the mat, and in 1963 Rusznyák trained at the famous Budapesti Honvéd, then transferred to DVTK in 1969. He competed in both freestyle and Greco-Roman events, winning seven national championship titles during his career.
Between 1967 and 1974 Rusznyák competed for the Hungarian national team. At the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, he finished 10th in freestyle and 16th in Greco-Roman. Four years later he placed eighth in the freestyle at the München Games. He achieved his greatest success in freestyle, finishing second at the 1970 European Championships in Berlin. Rusznyák did not leave wrestling after his sports career: he took a job as a coach at his last club, DVTK. Among his many students was the future Olympic champion Attila Repka.
