Biography

Gyula Szilágyi began his sports career as a wrestler at the Győr Athletic Club. He moved to Budapest in 1932 and continued his wrestling career at the Bp Vasutas. He won five Hungarian championship titles in the flyweight class; three in Greco-Roman (1946, 1947, 1949), and two in freestyle (1946, 1949).

In 1948 Szilágyi won the Balkan Championship in Zagreb and finished fifth at the London Olympics. In 1949 he was awarded the title of outstanding athlete of the Hungarian People’s Republic. He died relatively young, at the age of 44. After his death a wrestling memorial competition was organized in his hometown for years in his honour.
