In 1926 József Tunyogi appeared as a new big talent, winning the national youth championship. In 1928 he won his first national senior championship, in middleweight Greco-Roman. In 1929 he won his first European Championship title in that class, winning again in light-heavyweight freestyle in 1931. He traveled to Los Angeles as one of the favorites but had to settle for bronze due to injury. The following year, he attempted to recover but eventually had to abandon his career.
