The son of an architect and surveyor, Capel Pownall was educated at Malvern College, Worcestershire. At the time of the 1908 London Olympics, when he finished 11th in the Double York Round, he was assistant secretary of the Royal Toxophilite Society. He held the post between 1903-10. Pownall died at his Woking home in 1933 in the aptly named “Archery Cottage”.
