Biography
Lorenzo Calafiore, aka “Renzo”, was an Italian wrestler and wrestling coach. At the age of 20, he began competing in Greco-Roman at the former Gil gym. From 1954-61, he competed for the Fortitudo club. At the age of 26 he moved to Torino, joining the FIAT Sports Group, where he worked for Sisport. Nationally Calafiore won six titles from 1963-74 as a light-flyweight. He won the Italian Cup in 1963-69, 1971, and 1974, after which he retired.
Internationally, Calafiore won silver at the 1969 European Championship, adding a silver in that event in 1970. He was the 1971 Mediterranean Games Champion. Calafiore competed at the 1972 München Olympics, placing sixth and then turned to coaching with the Torino team.
On 1 January 1994 Calafiore was awarded the Medal for Athletic Valor and was subsequently nominated by the FILPJ (Italian Federation of Wrestling-Weightlifting-Judo) as a meritorious master of wrestling.
