Jacinto Ciria Cruz played basketball for the University of Santo Tomas and the Philippines’ national team. With the latter, he won gold at the 1930 and 1934 Far Eastern Games and placed fifth at the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games. Cruz started coaching university teams including Santo Tomas and, in 1938, the San Juan de Letran College, leading the team to win the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s championship.
In World War II, Cruz joined the Far East Air Forces. In December 1944, he was taken prisoner by the Japanese and was executed on Christmas Day. Later, a public sports complex was named after Jacinto Ciria Cruz.
