Turkish wrestler Adil Güngör competed in both freestyle and Greco-Roman disciplines, winning nine national titles during his career. In 1956 Güngör competed at the Wrestling World Cup in Istanbul before earning himself a place on the Olympic team. At the 1956 Melbourne Games he competed in freestyle wrestling in the lightweight class, winning his first two bouts before losing to Garibaldo Nizzola (ITA) to be eliminated. Four years later he returned to the Olympics, this time contesting the same weight in the Greco-Roman style. After winning his first bout, he then recorded three back-to-back draws before being eliminated. Güngör continued to wrestle throughout the decade, winning silver at the 1963 Balkan Championships and placing sixth at the World Championships two years later. His brother Hasan was also a noted wrestler who won gold at the Olympics in 1960.
