Biography

East German sailor Jörn Borowski was on the two person dinghy (470) at the 1980 Tallinn Olympic regattas, and won the silver medal with Egbert Swensson. They lost the gold medal because the Finnish pair Georg Tallberg and Jouko Lindgren finished the last regatta just one second ahead of the East Germans. In 1976-77, 1979-80, and 1982 Borowski and Swensson won the East German nationals. In 1980 and 1983 they won the European Championships, and in 1981 were runners-up. In 1982 they had their greatest moment when they became World Champions.

Borowski’s father Paul won a bronze and a silver medal at the 1968 and 1972 Olympic Games, respectively. Also, his non-Olympian brother Bodo was a successful international sailor. In 1999 and 2019, Borowski won two more silver medals at the Worlds and Europeans in the non-Olympic Flying Dutchman class, with Andreas Berlin in 1999, and with his brother Bodo in 2019. By profession, Borowski became a graduated sports teacher, but later worked with the international Baltic Sea Ferry company.
