Charles Campbell’s father emigrated to New Zealand in 1874 to become a sheep farmer, but the Olympic gold medallist was born in England and educated at Eton. At the 1908 Olympics, he sailed aboard Blair Cochrane’s Cobweb and, like the other crew members, lived on the Isle of Wight and was a member of the Royal Victoria Yacht Club and the Royal Yacht Squadron. During the war, Campbell served in the Life Guards and the Royal Tank Corps and was on the personal staff of General Sir Alex Godley, the officer commanding the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. As his elder brother had been killed in action in 1915, Charles succeeded to the Baronetcy on the death of his father in 1919.
