Giuseppe Carattino began sailing at age 14 when he was allowed to navigate and assist his fathers and uncles in exchange for cleaning and organizing their equipment. Carattino was a seven-time Italian Champion in Flying Dutchman and was the 1955 Mediterranean Games gold medalist in the Dragon class. Carattino was awarded the Knight of the Republic for his sporting accomplishments and in 2002 was given the Bronze Star by the state of Italy.
