Berend Carp and helmsman Joop Carp were brothers. Bernard was an industrialist and was appointed director of the Dutch spirits company Bols. In 1946 he moved to South Africa to manage a distillery of his company in Cape Town. He was later followed to South Africa by his brother. Berend participated in ornithological expeditions, mostly in Southwest Africa (now Namibia), and published a book called I Choose Africa.
