Being born on the Isle of Wight, sailing was always going to be in Eric Denham’s blood and he was selected as the foredeck hand to skipper Robin Aisher aboard Yeoman XII in the 5.5 metre class at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. They were never in contention after starting poorly in the opening race and a series of mishaps saw them classified in 11th place with a best finish of just sixth in races five and six. Eric emigrated to Canada in his Olympic year and continued his career as a schoolteacher. In his latter years he suffered from Alzheimer’s disease before passing away in Canada, the country in which he had made his home for more than 50 years.
