Kurt Frey

Kurt Frey finished sixth with the 6-metre class sailing team at the 1936 Berlin Olympics at Kiel, where the sailing events took place. Their boat Gustel V was disqualified in races two and five, otherwise it would have won a medal. Only a few weeks earlier, the yacht had won the German national title.

Frey studied law in Kiel and München. During World War II he was recruited as a marine officer. In 1947 he returned from Russian captivity, and then started a career education. Frey became CEO of the Studentenwerk (Student Affairs) in Kiel, and in 1950, CEO of the Verbandes Deutscher Studentenwerke (German Association of Student Affairs). In 1953 he became a General Secretary of the German UNESCO Commission. From 1955-75 he then was General Secretary of the Kultusministerkonferenz (Conference of Ministers of Education).
