Biography

Hungarian sailor Imre Holényi competed in several boat classes throughout his career and had the most success in the Flying Dutchman. In 1959 Holényi finished second at the national championships before going on to have consistent results at international competitions, including eighth at the World Championships in England and fourth in the European Championships in Sweden. These results earned Holényi a place on the Olympic team for the 1960 Games in Roma. He paired with Albin Molnár and they came 13th out of the 31 teams to compete. They suffered with a poor start to the competition, finishing 20th in the first race, but came back with a couple of good results, including second place in the fifth of the seven races.

Away from sailing Holényi earned a degree in chemical engineering, working as a plant manager and the chief engineer. He was in high demand in Europe, with the Swedish company Dynamit Nobel AG hiring him in 1968. He worked at the company in Göteborg until he retired, with Holényi then settling in Spain with his wife.
