The German basketball team did not play any role in the Olympic tournament of the 1936 Berlin Games when basketball was held for the first time at Olympic Games. They lost their matches against Switzerland (25-18), Italy (58-16) and Czechoslovakia (20-9) in the first two rounds and were eliminated.
Emil Göing was a professional soldier and played nationally for Heeressportschule Wünsdorf, winning the first unofficial German Championship with them in 1938. Göing played handball before turning to basketball and went on to win 18 international caps between 1936 and 1942. He was appointed assistant coach to the national team in 1939.
After World War II, Göing was one of the pioneers of basketball in Germany, especially in his home-town Göttingen. He founded the basketball section of SV Göttingen in 1946 and headed the basketball division within the Lower Saxony Sports Federation. In 1950 he was one of the co-founders of the Lower Saxony Basketball Federation and was the chairman until 1956. He was later known as the “Father of Basketball in Göttingen”. Göing owned a lottery shop in Göttingen.
