Biography

Chris Hooijkaas was the skipper of the “Mascotte”, a sharpie-type yacht that won second place in one of the races for 3-10 ton yachts at the 1900 Olympics. With his crewman Arie van der Velden, this makes Hooijkaas the first Olypmic medalist for the Netherlands. In Paris, Hooijkaas sailed a yacht owned by Henri Smulders, but he also raced his own boats and another of Smulders’ yachts, “Elly”. Outside of sailing, Hooijkaas was a trained carpenter, and in the 1920s he owned a contracting company. He was also a noted voluntary fireman for over four decades.
