Harry Hunter was born and raised in Bearsden, Glasgow and educated at Glenalmond. He served in the Navy during World War II, after which he took part in the 6-metre class at the 1948 Olympic sailing events as a member of the Royal Clyde Yacht Club. He was a member of Howden Hume’s 4-man crew, aboard Johan, along with the brothers Bonar and Hamish Hardie, and Hume’s son Douglas, all of which were close family friends. The boat, purchased by Howden Hulme in 1945, finished fifth overall, with their best finish being third in race six.
With an inheritance of money following his father’s death, Hunter briefly owned and operated a pig farm in Lochwinnoch, then moved to Rhodesia in the late 1950s where he worked in a copper mine. Here he was involved in an accident in which he eventually lost one of his legs after his foot was run over by a mining car. Returning to Scotland, he later worked in the paper and printing business until his retirement.
