Biography

Masa Ishii was a four-time Japanese Snipe class champion, in addition to sailing twice at the Olympics Games, in Dragon class in 1960 and Star class in 1964. Ishii won a bronze medal at the 1959 World Championship in Snipe class, which has never been an Olympic class. He was born to a father who was a building contractor, and after university, Masa Ishii rose to become an executive in the paper industry in Japan. He later became a judge and umpire for international sailing, including at the 1992 Olympic Games, at the 1995 America’s Cup in San Diego, in several Whitbread Round-the-World races and Melbourne-to-Osaka races.
